Mexican water authority picks Huawei to upgrade networks

Mexican water authority Conagua has selected Chinese manufacturer Huawei to upgrade, operate and maintain its networks, as part of an overall plan to become more digital.

The manufacturer said in a statement that the first step toward modernizing the entire network was to upgrade 30 Conagua offices across the country from Wi-Fi 4 to Wi-Fi 6.

The wireless network the manufacturer built for the authority includes “highly reliable carrier-grade devices, fully wireless access and a unified management platform,” Huawei said, without disclosing the total cost of the project.

Conagua’s networks were built in 2014, but the outdated technology and its low capacity to process massive data prevented it from providing more digital services and managing water resources.

With the AirEngine Wi-Fi 6 technology the offices are working with speeds of around 10Gbit/s, which is similar to fiber optics, according to Huawei.

Among the strategies that Conagua included in its 2020-24 national water program (PNH), presented a year ago, were the adoption of new technologies to improve the management of water resources and the digital transformation of public services, but the government has never published the entire digital plan.

It is still unclear which other digital initiatives Huawei will implement for Conagua.
